Video speech:

Chen Qingqing’s Fantasy Museum

Photo1. Qing Qing at At Cafe 798 crop

The café, perched above the 798 art district, was empty, giving the sunlight a golden opportunity to shadow wooden tables. The setting seemed apt as across the table from me sat Chen Qingqing, a leading light, in more ways than one, of Chinese contemporary art.

With a major exhibition, “Fantasy Museum” showing at the Yuan Art Museum, her first in three years, Qingqing is relishing the chance to show her work, which focuses on wooden drawer installations, fiber hemp grass garments and light boxes, to a new audience.

Making the Hair Lock – Intimate Transgressions project

When knitting with your own DNA you have to allow yourself to be flexible because you know the material isn’t always perfect. Different hairs have different tensile and elastic qualities. In fact, I often find myself working with a single strand that is partially grey and hard and wiry and the other part is very fine and soft with some degree of elasticity. In a way the process of working with this material forces you to be gentle and patient with yourself, it is a good personal exercise.

Below is a short film talking a little about the Hair Lock and Chain and reflections on the exhibition for which this work was made. Many thanks to David Muskett and his macro lens and the magic dust he sprinkled on a super swift edit.

What difference does the word make-President Higgins State visit to China.

President Higgins State visit to China.

I have always admired orators, well spoken words can take us out of ourselves, giving a shared experience rather than an isolated one. They are non material and work beyond and outside routine categories and yet can deal with daily experience in a transforming way.(*) The arrival of President Higgins to Beijing embraced and expressed many aspects of culture shared by the two countries.
