Mamo Greenfingers. DC acrylic on canvas 50×50 cm Niamh Cunningham /瑞莲 2019

A portrait will be posted every week (usually Sunday afternoon) on this website home page throughout the year of 2019. Some are of young Chinese learners whom I used to teach in my early years in China, some are of family and friends, others are of artists and curators with whom I have worked over the years in China.

Many years ago Aine, a friend and neighbour was talking about my mother and said ‘Poor you Niamh , having a such a fantastic mother. ‘ My mum reared eight children , designed sewed and knitted most of our clothes , weekly homebaked dozens of buns, 6-7 fruit tarts, spot of the dog, , cake dessert, pavolova, a couple of fruitcakes (one rich one poor! ) , along with the regular meals, gardened a one acre plot, wallpapered and painted a room every year, and sometimes would try her hand in replacing rooftiles. “Why do you pity me having such a mother ” I asked my friend . ” Because Niamh people will expect you to turn out like her ! ” To this day she shovels, hauls debris, plants prunes and cares for her garden from season to season.

2019年每个星期我都会在网站首页上放一幅肖像作品。其中一些是我刚到中国时曾经教过的年轻的中国学生(清澈的牛奶系列),有些是朋友、家人,还有近年来与我一起工作的艺术家和策展人。
