#15 Once I Counted Birds

Very pleased to have a video from Ireland’s leading figure on The Earth Charter, Dr Cathy Fitzgearld. I have known Cathy for many years , and I have taken a number of her courses with Haumea Ecoversity such at Eco Literacy for Creatives and Cultural  Professionals and most recently on  the Earth Charter .

Cathy made this video in 2009 . Originally from Aotearoa , New Zealand, she was part of  a biodiversity research trip to unpeopled  Suwarrow atoll in the  Cook Islands,  South Pacific. Cathy is currently based in County Carlow, Ireland where she and her husband Martin have since 2008 , been diversifying a small conifer plantation forest on their land to become a mixed species, more resilient, more bird-song-filled small continuous cover forest (Hollywoodforest.com)..

Cathy’s words on Trees:

Once I counted birds on a very remote unpeopled atoll in the South Pacific.  Only a few feet above sea-level this special place was crammed with life in every shape and colour in all our busyness it could be very easy to forget such places and their fate with rising seas.  Yet 10,000 miles away, it is funny how the wind in my forest sounds like the sea . It’s connected I think , each forest we tend , each small action we take.”

original score: Dan Berridge

I highly recommend the transformative learning offered by Dr Fitzgearld for art professionals , educators and business owners and policy makers on her platform Haumea Ecoversity

#14 Ancient Yew Trees

Delighted to get this tree story  from a dear neighbour and good friend Sonia Gibbons. The  Yew Trees near her gate have some special local history and contain the story of moving a church brick by brick across the river .

My home is built on the grounds of the former St Annes Church. Built in the 1840’s by Colonel Bruen. Colonel Bruen felt there was a need, coupled with some of the parishioners, for Church on his domain and he proceeded to build St Annes Church .The beautiful wall outside is flanked by two ancient YewTrees . If those trees could talk they could tell a lot of tales .

The Church was taken down in 1926, moved across the river and built as a catholic church now known as St Clares ’s Church.

Two yew trees remain flanking either side of the gate.

For English Click Here

无可指摘(的孩子)的美德;

#13 Winter Apples

For video #13 I am delighted to have award winning writer John Mac Kenna read his poem Winter Apples, for the special season.

John is author of twenty three books and a number of radio and stage plays including his award winning radio documentary series on Leonard Cohen.

John is based near my hometown of Carlow, Ireland .

Winter Apples   by John Mac Kenna

There is something in the sight of winter apples

hugging the highest branch in mid-December.

A dim burn glistens from the frosted skin,

like sunlight budding through a fog.

And there is sweetness and sharpness in the flesh:

the virtue of the blameless , the long hill yet to climb.

#12 Bee Tree (part 1 ) Sycamore

I recently met conservationist Mick Verspuij in Buncranna, Donegal, Ireland . He makes natural habitats for bee hives using old dead tree trunks . Here he talks about pollen and the Sycamore Tree in his yard. He has a few tree stories for the Memory Palace of Trees Stories.

A sycamore tree, a semi mature or a mature tree can produce up to half a million flowers , so it’s a crucial crop for the honey bees because it is quite early in the season as well. And it’s all around the time where the colony really needs it most because they are expanding their in numbers very rapidly . By having just one of those trees on the ground , the same match as half an acre of wild flowers, which is actually surprisingly good because as it only takes up a tiny bit of space , it is brilliant for the bees.

At the end of May start of June , it’s an ideal time because they bring in so much . Once that tree goes to flower its like someone has just switched on a hairdryer inside the tree because the noise it makes is phenomenal , it just hums for two solid weeks , the bees make sure they collect all the pollen from it and all the nectar .

#10 Forest Breath – Tree Story

Forest Breath Video #10

I first encountered  the “Forest Breath” concept when reading David Haskell’s book  “Songs of Trees”. He was discussing the Formosa Pine  and I thought it a fascinating perception that “air is 400 millions years of forest breath”.

You might  wonder  how many times is it possible for  an oxygen  atom  to be recycled  after numerous binding and cleaving,  before it gets ” too old” or if even  there is such a thing as an atom getting old?

Nevertheless , these basic atoms pass in and out of different life forms  as life evolved on earth. Where will the balance  of this  gas exchange lie  as the globes forests continue to be decimated at break neck speed .
