#4 Old Ash – a real survivor- Memory Palace of Trees

 简体中文

For this video we find ourselves in a lush green field in Ireland .

This tree story comes from artist Gillian Cussen in county Cork, Ireland.

Hello My name is Gillian Cussen

and I am in county Cork Ireland

And it’s a grey and a green day here

I’ve chosen this old ash tree for my tree story today

I believe this tree is a real survivor

This tree plus a neighbouring birch are the only two trees left in this big field

Which once had a lot of trees but due to modern agricultural practices

unfortunately most of them are gone.

But this tree houses a lot of plants and insects and animals I am sure .

Really beautiful and rich mosses it also has unfortunately some barbed wire

But it has lots of ivy too.

And even stones embedded in it.

This is indeed a survivor

A really beautiful tree.

Gillian is a fellow artist whom I met last year on online, we were both studying a course  “ Eco literacy in the Arts” by Dr Cathy Fitzgearld.

#3 Trees are like Humans – Memory Palace of Trees

#3 Trees are like Humans

简体中文

This is # 3 of the Memory Palace of Trees stories on video , many thanks to educator Jenny Hong for her tree story .

***************

Jenny’s words:

Trees are like Humans,

They grow differently according to different places and different climate.

When every spring comes ,it doesn’t matter if there is Covid 19 or not ,

they all put on their new leaves and flowers as well.

I especially like this kind of old tree, very old, like this one ,

I assume is over 100 years old.

And also those trees that are growing against the wall

outside Lama temple , they never complain.

They never push away anyone who seeks for shelter.

Just like our family, no matter how weary you are, how upset you are,

They always welcome you home warmly with their open arms.

So, all the trees have got their character too,

Just like us!

#2 Pomegranate Tree – Memory Palace of Trees

简体中文

Our second video story comes from the village of the Ming Tombs , a big thank you to Han Chao  for his tree story .

Hello everyone, I’m Han Chao . This is the tree story I want to share.

This is a pomegranate tree, in a village of the Ming Tombs area in Changping, Beijing.

Last year during the pandemic, I moved into this yard.

At that time the whole world was talking about life and death, however, the tree flourished.

In autumn, there were several large pomegranates.

A year later, I’m  preparing to leave this yard, but the tree didn’t survive.

Because it isn’t coming into leaf, its without any buds.

The world revives, yet the tree has died.

Perhaps that’s why it makes me feel a certain way.

It’s the tree that reminds me of world’s uncertainties and constant changing between life and death.

#1 Empty Tendrils- Memory Palace of Trees

简体中文

I am so very happy to begin the tree stories on video for the Memory Palace of Trees.

Artist Yvette Stride talks about her favourite tree in Shunyi.

….the way they hold the rain , like tear drops after a storm …

Hi my name is Yvette Stride and this is my tree story .

My tree lives on the banks of a canal in Shunni  near where I live ..in Beijing .

And this is my tree .

What I love about this tree is the empty tendrils that you can see ,

The way they hold the rain like tear drops after a storm .

It reminds me of the joys and pains of life, regeneration, healing after suffering

And all that we are, to make ourselves ourselves in this life, all that we experience.

And that is my tree story.
